US Expands Online Immigration Services to Speed Up Processing and Strengthen Fraud Detection
US is rolling out its online filing system to expedite application processing and enhance its identity checks, fraud detection and national security screening.
In a recent announcement, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) states that it is rolling out its online filing system to make immigration applications more efficient to process, enhance identity verification and bolster national security screening and fraud detection.
According to USCIS, the expansion would facilitate more efficient processing of immigration forms and enhance the protection against fraud in the process. The agency advised applicants to visit its online filing options page, which explains how they can submit their applications and documents using an online USCIS account.
The agency has an online filing system that gives you two options for filing immigration papers: you can fill out an online application on the agency's website, following a step-by-step process, or you can submit a completed and signed PDF form with the supporting documentation.
USCIS takes next steps toward digital applications
As USCIS transitions to an increasing number of electronic submissions of immigration documents, the agency is accelerating the development of its online filing system to streamline application processing, bolster fraud detection and improve identity verification and national security screening capabilities.
The agency emphasized its online filing methods in a post on X, advising its applicants to obtain instructions on how to file immigration forms online through the agency's official website. On October 7, 2026, USCIS updated its webpage detailing two methods for filing forms online via an applicant's USCIS account.
The transfer comes as part of a larger effort by the Department of Homeland Security to streamline immigration benefit applications, encouraging them to go digital instead of paper.
There are two methods of filing immigration forms online.
The applicants are given two options under the present system:
Guided online filing: Applicants complete questions in an electronic form, which is tailored for the kind and type of application they are filling. The system should direct users along the way and enable them to provide the information which will be necessary to their filing.
Upload of a completed immigration form with supporting documents: Applicants must submit supporting documents and a filled-out PDF copy of an immigration form via their USCIS online account. Both methods enable an applicant to control their cases via their online accounts. USCIS also provides resources explaining how to create accounts, upload evidence and respond to requests for evidence electronically.
For some forms, it will be mandatory to file online

The expansion is based upon an interim final rule published in the Federal Register on August 11 that provides USCIS with the authority to mandate electronic filing of immigration forms which are posted online for at least 180 days.
The rule mandates that USCIS have a mandatory electronic filing requirement posted on its website to notify applicants, and then give them an extra 60 days to meet the requirement. If someone has undue hardship in filing electronically, they may apply for a waiver pursuant to the procedure established.
The change would ease the reliance on physically mailing applications and documents to immigration authorities and government lockboxes, while enabling immigration applications and supporting documents to go into digital systems with greater efficiency, the Department of Homeland Security said.
Through electronic filing, the agency hopes that avoidable errors will be eliminated, application data will become more current and accurate and that fraud detection will be enhanced by the increased access to electronic records and analytical tools. The transition is also aimed at enhancing identity management and implementing better background checks and screening for national security.
