A vehicle was intercepted by the DRI officials on Saturday after the agency received “specific information” about the movement of unaccounted money by some individuals who were travelling from Shahjahanpur area, the agency said.
In a search of one of the bags carried by the suspects, ₹35 lakh was recovered. An inside search of the vehicle to find the money found special-made holes in the door, where an additional ₹2.65 crore had been stowed, bringing the total money recovered to ₹3 crore.
The DRI said the individuals arrested in the operation were unable to provide documentation to prove they had a lawful possession or source of the money.
The seizure comes on the heels of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in 2027 and the upcoming elections in Uttarakhand. The agency also pointed out that the car had come from a district Shahjahanpur close to Indo Nepal border in the region.
But the DRI press release did not make any direct connection between the recovered money and election activities. The seizure was informed to income tax department which will proceed further and take action accordingly, the agency said.
